The New & Improved Floppy Disk

I’m sure you all still remember the floppy disk right…that old storage device from the 80’s that always had slightly less available storage space then you needed.  Well despite most estimates of it having been permanently retired, the floppy disk has recently made a triumphant return after receiving a slight upgrade.  Thomas O’Connor of Detroit took the infamous piece of square plastic and recycled it into a USB Drive so you could store more than the traditional 1.44mb.  Nice!!

Office Desks: Part 12

Am I the only one who still loves the design qualities of the classic roll top desk?  Just found this one while on my quest for a new office desk.  The All American Cherry Emerson Cylinder Roll Top Desk II (could they have named it something longer?) has one pullout writing surface, one utility drawer, and three drawers behind the rolltop.

The desk is available from  Computer Desks N More for $1049.

The Desktop Coffee Maker is available from Firebox for £19.95, and includes two black mugs.

Office Desks: Part 11

Nowadays most desks are designed to accommodate the various electronics that seem to run our daily lives, and as a result have lost much of the charm which is found in this lovely Yves Writing Desk by Russel Pinch.

The piece is made of solid walnut, with a leather top, and two drawers.  And while this desk may have been designed as a return to mid-century aesthetics, I think it would still function well as a small computer desk, the top shelf housing a monitor, and the small drawer in the middle being a perfect hiding place for a wireless keyboard.

The Yves Writing Desk is available for $3268.

Super Tiny USB Keyboard

As opposed to the worlds largest keyboard I showed you guys a few days ago, this keyboard from Brando is absolutely tiny.  While it doesn’t quite qualify as the worlds smallest keyboard, at 6.6 inches it’s about as small as I could ever handle for use with a desktop computer.

It crams in 56 keys, including caps lock, num lock, and function keys, and has a mini-USB connector on the back.

The Super Tiny Keyboard can be yours for only $25.

Office Desks: Part 9

Ok so for most of my office desk series I have shown you guys a bunch of great desks, all of which I really like, but most of which aren’t really all that practical.  So to change things up I wanted to show you this gorgeous black desk which has more of a classic office design feel as opposed to the more modern minimalist designs I have shown you up until now.

The Portofino Decorative Desk is made by Stanley Furniture, and offers an aged appeal with extreme antiquing and the Portofino’s signature rub-thorough finish.  It features a center keyboard drawer, two utility drawers, and one file drawer, and comes in either ivory or basque black.

You can buy the desk at Black Lion Furniture for $1179.

Email Notification Box

Like most other people who have become slaves of the workplace, I spend an inordinate amount of time checking my email. Partly because I take pride in responding to work related emails in a timely fashion, but also because it’s the ultimate distraction from an otherwise dull environment. I mean who knows that types of delightful surprises might be waiting in your inbox? Perhaps a message from an old friend, a new facebook notification, or maybe the lottery chose you as their first random online winner!

Point being, sometimes you need to know right away when you get a new email. So why not use this strangely large, envelope shaped blue box, that lights up when you have a new message. It works in the background via USB and supports Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, Outlook Express, and POP3.

Herman Miller Embody Chair

At last it looks like Herman Millers much anticipated new office chair, the Embody, will finally becoming available. The chair, which was designed by the late Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber, has a 4 layer cushion with 93 plastic hexagon discs that move around as users shift their weight in the chair.

The Embody will come in 13 colors, and should be available starting early 2009 for a measly $1595.
